In Memory of Sergeant First Class CJ Sadell

Sgt. 1st Class Charles M. “CJ” Sadell passed away on October 24, 2010, at the Bethesda Naval Hospital from wounds injuries sustained in an insurgent attack in Arif Kala, Afghanistan. CJ was a dedicated and beloved individual who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering dedication to his family, and a genuine love for the great outdoors.

Born on October 11, 1976, in Columbia, Missouri, CJ was the cherished son of Charles Walter and Donnalyn Jane (Curry) Sadell. He was a proud graduate of Harrisburg High School, class of 1995, and spent his childhood years in the Columbia, Missouri, and Alberta, Canada areas. His journey of service to his country began when he enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school, marking the start of a remarkable career that took him around the world.

On August 21, 1999, CJ married the love of his life, Kristin Dawn McMillan, in Columbia, Missouri. The couple made their home in Weston, Missouri, and together, they were blessed with two sons, Cameron and Hunter, who brought boundless joy to their lives.

CJ was an ardent outdoorsman, relishing every moment spent hunting and fishing. He found solace and camaraderie on the golf course, where he could enjoy the company of friends and family. His passion for life extended to playing poker and engaging in various recreational activities.

CJ’s magnetic personality and genuine charm drew people to him effortlessly. He was known for his respect, his unwavering commitment to being an outstanding husband and an extraordinary father, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of crossing his path.

During his military service, CJ was stationed at various posts, including Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Dexheim, Germany; Fort Huachuca, Arizona; and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His deployments carried him to numerous regions, including a tour in Saudi Arabia in 1997, a six-month deployment in Kosovo in 2001, and a 12-month tour to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His final deployment brought him to Afghanistan in the spring of 2010 with 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

CJ’s unwavering dedication to his duty earned him several awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, among other prestigious honors for his superior performance and personal heroism.

CJ is survived by his loving wife, Kristin, and their two sons, Cameron and Hunter. SFC Sadell’s legacy will continue to inspire all who remember his unwavering commitment to duty, family, and the great outdoors. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
