Nathan Krissoff, a proud alum of Williams College and a valiant officer in the United States Marine Corps, passed away on December 9, 2006, in the line of duty during a deployment in Fallujah, Iraq. His life was marked by a profound commitment to service, exemplified not only by his personal sacrifice but also by the enduring legacy he left behind.

Born on March 29, 1981, in Truckee, California, Nathan moved to Reno as a child. His formative years were characterized by academic excellence, athletic prowess, and an innate leadership ability. He attended The Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, California, where he excelled in water polo, swimming, and piano, graduating as the student body president. His love for the outdoors and his exceptional talent in kayaking earned him a spot on the U.S. Junior National Wildwater Kayak Team, competing in two world championships in Europe.

In 2003, Nathan graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, with a degree in political science. He captained the men’s swim team, leaving an indelible mark on his college community. Following a year in Europe, Nathan made a significant life choice – he joined the United States Marine Corps in 2004, driven by a deep conviction to contribute to the Global War on Terror.

Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Nathan Krissoff embodied the ethos of a modern-day knight. His deployment to Iraq in August 2006 saw him serving as the counterintelligence officer for the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion. During his deployment, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, leading a Human Intelligence Exploitation Team sub-team on multiple operations and participating in numerous combat patrols.

Tragically, on December 9, 2006, during an intelligence mission in Fallujah, Iraq, Nathan’s vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). Nathan Krissoff, only four months into his nine-month deployment, took the brunt of the blast, sacrificing his life for the cause he deeply believed in.

For his exemplary service and sacrifice, Nathan Krissoff posthumously received the Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Commendation Medal with the Combat Distinguishing Device for Valor. However, his impact extended beyond accolades. His funeral, held in his hometown of Reno, became a testament to the lives he touched and the inspiration he provided.

Nathan’s family, especially his brother Austin, felt the profound loss. In a poignant turn of events, their father, Dr. William Krissoff, an orthopedic surgeon, decided to fulfill Nathan’s mission. Dr. Krissoff, moved by his son’s sacrifice, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2007, becoming Lt. Cmdr. William Krissoff. Leaving his successful practice behind, he served in Iraq for six years, providing medical care to Marines in the field, embodying the spirit of service that ran deep in the Krissoff family.

The Marines who served with Nathan honored him with eloquent eulogies, describing him as an ideal Marine – affable, mature, and deeply caring about his fellow comrades. His legacy lives on not only in the awards he received or the missions he led but in the hearts and memories of those who knew him.

Nathan Krissoff’s life, though tragically cut short, stands as a testament to the values of duty, honor, and sacrifice. In the words of Lt. Col. William Seely, his battalion commander, “Nathan, your love, your brotherhood, your memory, like the flash in the horizon at sunset and sunrise, will be endless. Your silence will be deafening.”
